Last night was a merry affair, and very enjoyable. Got seats for the second half too, so two happy customers. There was something touchingly old-fashioned about the entire evening: so much so that about halfway through the first half I had a sort of brief out-of-body experience in which I felt myself transported back to 1972 and the first ever folk club I attended, which was the Coppers' club in Peacehaven. I don't suppose you can use that as a testimonial... But I think you've connected with something intrinsic to the folk music experience. | ||||

As the old ‘Four Seasons’ 70’s chart hit exclaims: “OH WHAT A NIGHT!”. And what a night it was! This was the third in a series of regular local community oriented folk evenings master-minded, organised and hosted by Jon Boden and his lovely and talented wife, Fay Hield and the first one that Sylvia and I had been able to get to - despite our strongest desires to do so before. There was a fabulous and rich array of young (and not so young) ‘drop in’ talent (which included the delightful Hannah James and the legendary Will Noble – just to name a couple) making up a fantastic evening of traditional folk music , just the way mother used to make it - to which was carefully and lovingly added by Jon and Fay; just the right amount of the ‘bring it up to date’ element. Headliner guests ‘The Young’uns’ acapella trio from Hartlepool - with an average age of what seems like about 12 years between them....:-) absolutely blew everybody away with their tightly crafted and skilfully executed harmony arrangements of some of the best sea shanties in existence. The experience of the tightly ‘packed in’ audience was clearly and suitably enhanced by their zany, ‘off the cuff’ and at times, delightfully chaotic humorous stage presentation. To anyone who hasn’t yet seen them let me recommend that you watch out for them in your own local area and take the first opportunity that comes your way to go and see them – you will be amazed and delighted that you did, Just take my word for it...terrific! |
